Go to Bosnia for a day? Sure, because you can…

After three and a bit months of touring and minimal thinking, it was a good shock to the system to actually have to think for myself and figure out what I am doing day to day. I had planned for a couple of days to kind of get myself in order.

however, I heard about a day trip to Bosnia. Cause you just do that in Europe, unlike home which the nearest country is a two hour flight away… so, what the hell! Let’s to go to Bosnia.

I had set up to go with a group tour that was run from the hostel and went to the place they advised I go. Unfortunately, no one turned up. Luckily another van pulled up and they were looking for someone else to go with them for the same type of tour. He just said since she’s not here you jump in. Not sure if I was going to actually end up in Bosnia but what they hey. Life is full of little adventures. As it turned out, we did go through the border into Bosnia well technically not Bosnia but I actually went to Herzegovina. So Bosnia/Herzegovina is an interesting country which is really two parts. The northern part is known as Bosnia and the Southern is Herzegovina. There is no actually border just more a mountain range that they kind of define. The other part is that there is a three member presidency. so the three major ethnic groups each have their own president within one country, how this works? Wouldn’t have a clue…

The country is stepped in history as with the other Balkan countries and something that is not normally spoken about as I’ve discussed before. It’s something to be mindful that Bosnia only proclaimed independence in 1992. This lead to the Bosnian war till 1995. So this is a country still recovering from a war and something that is still fresh in the minds of allot of people. This is something people don’t even consider when they go to a country and just look at the sights and sounds of the world and not appreciate the history and the culture. In my opinion, that is what really makes a country worth seeing.

So first stop for us was Mostar. Now this place is like a sun trap. It’s a very beautiful place and is situated in a valley and gets a ton of sun and very little wind with it. This resulted in a lot of water, orange juice and Gelato being consumed. Great thing was this was very cheap and more importantly was very tasty. Same goes with the food, not for the vegetarian lifestyle though. They have some great mixed meat dishes to eat for a good lunch. Also the local kittens come out to play while you eat.

One of the things that Mostar is famous for is the Bridge and for those that have watched Hamish and Andy jump it I suggest you do. It’s a 25 meter high jump off A bridge and there is even A festival for people to come and jump. By now you should know this sounds like a great idea to me, so I asked the guide if I can do the jump. Unfortunately you needed to arrange it well in advance, as they first take you to a smaller 10 meter jump to see if you can jump correctly as at 25 meters well you can do some serious damage if you can’t land the jump right.  Shame I didn’t have the time really….. this time…

Next was A little village and I’ll be honest. I can not for the life of me remember the name.  It was a peaceful little village and was also a fortified position during the wars and used as a spotted position to watch out for incoming attacks. This meant A good little climb to view the old tower and get A good view of the surrounding area.

That left the best for last. That was the Kravice falls near Mostar. These were beautiful and was gutted I didn’t bring my togs to go for a swim!

It was an amazing day, but a hell of a long one! A good 13 hours round trip but if you have the option to go I would not pass it up.
