Joshua of Jordan

Joshua of Jordan

Yeah, I actually got called that in the Wadi Rum desert, but i’ll come back to that later. The road to Jordan was certainly a long one coming from Egypt. We made it to Petra 11:30 pm after our 2 am start back in Egypt. We were then told that we have a 5 hours or so sleep before we had a 13 km hike.

Though we had very little, if no sleep from the previous few days we managed to drag ourselves up and get going to see Petra. It was well worth the sleep deprivation. The canyons, Treasury and Monastery are amazing! The way they were carved out of the rock face. They are truly great work’s.

After which we had a little down time to relax before a beautiful dinner. There was an option to go back to Petra as we had a two day pass and climb up a small mountain to the sacrifice site. However our guide said would be a four hour round trip and we leave at 11:30 am for next stop. This meant a 6 am climb. Silly bugger I am, I said I would!

To be fair, a few others said they would as well, But i ended up going by myself (Slackers!!!) to the top. Though it was a nice feeling to climb to the top of this ancient place on your own in the silence of the early morning and appreciate it with no one else around. I also called bull shit on the 4 hours Ogla (our guide) told us it would. Took less than two but that could have me been pumped to get up there and see it.

From here you could see most of Petra and also Aaron’s tomb (brother of Moses)

Next, we popped into little Petra on our way to Wadi Rum desert. This for me was a massive highlight and Surprise. To go stay a night in the desert was one thing but to go 4×4 driving was epic. Our driver was Crazy and had mad skills. Took so us all over the place. We even had one of the girls drive and she was just as crazy with the same skills!

We stopped and got to  some dunes. And had a couple photo ops with the drivers and wild life.

We were lucky enough to stay at this awesome camp and enjoy a desert sundown.
It was a beautiful night in the desert and I’ve had my scarf since Egypt that I’ve worn when it gets extremely hot. Wore it during the afternoon and early evening before dinner and had one of the locals calling me Joshua of Jordan. To be fair better than some of the names I’ve been called in the past.

It also came out later on when we had the fire going and local musician and people from the camp got up and started dancing around the fire. When you get called up you just ump right in there even if you don’t know the local dancing. It was a blast and great no one took any photos of that performance!

The next day saw us head to the dead sea and had a stop at a canyon for a did of a hike and play in the water. This was a blast and big props to Sima who is one of the older guys but has the spirit and enthusiasm of a 20 year old. Some of the climbs weren’t easy and he tried hard.

Then it was finally time to relax and go jump into the dead sea. So for those that don’t know it’s the lowest point on earth and also the lowest seas being 400 meters below sea level. The water has such a high salt content nothing can live in it, makes you float and can’t sink. Oh and stings like a bastard of you have sunburn or a cut.

The other cool thing is that the mud from the sea is meant to be really good for the skin and helps detox the body. Well that’s my excuse for covering myself in mud after this crack up guy went way overboard with the mud and we had a good laugh.

On my last day in Jordan I got to go someplace quite special. The site where Jesus and John the Baptist where baptized. This site is right on the Jordan river and right on the boarder with Jordan and Israel. There is only seven meters between us it’s quite cool to see only a small river separate them.

I even managed to dip in and take some of the waters away with me.

After a bit more fun in the dead sea. Was time to have our final dinner and then have a few drinks and say my good byes before leaving at 3 am for my next destination. Morocco! It has been a great trip. I’ve learnt a few things about myself some good and some to make me realize I have a long way to go as a person and that this trip is the right choice and hope to try and come out of it better. Time will tell ?

  1. Brings back some good memories of a trip to Jordan in the early nineties Josh. Thanks. Make sure you go to Fez in Morocco and have Turkish bath in Marakesh. Go well.
